Graduation Ceremony Cancelled – How About a Virtual Celebration?

Schools in Toronto and around the world started postponing their graduation ceremonies when the realities of a global pandemic could no longer be ignored. While many soon to be graduates hoped that the chance to wear their graduation gown was simply delayed, it was soon clear that physical ceremonies were going to be cancelled indefinitely.

After many years of hard work, it was disappointing for students to learn that their chance to walk across the stage in traditional graduation robes and hats was a milestone they were going to have to forego. Enter the virtual graduation ceremony! While we know it’s not the same, it has provided some type of closure for students graduating in a year that’s been anything but normal.

H2: 3 Ways to Make Virtual Graduation Ceremonies Memorable

The details of the graduation ceremony and celebration may be different but the accomplishment is the same, and those graduates need to be recognized! Schools are doing what they can to make the best of the situation, but that doesn’t mean that graduates shouldn’t also get involved and add to the occasion.

Here are three ways to help make a virtual graduation ceremony as positive of an experience as possible:

  1. Wear a graduation gown. We know you might be thinking this is over the top, especially when the world has been living in jogging pants and sweatshirts, but this is one time when your outfit needs to match the occasion. You’ll be surprised at how good you feel when you put on that graduation robe! Graduation attire is full of tradition and prestige and there is no reason why you can’t at least experience that and snap a few pictures at the same time.

  1. Make it personal. In all parts of the world, academic institutions are doing a great job at adding as much personal details as possible to their virtual graduation ceremonies. From adding a photo highlight reel of the graduating class, to ensuring there’s a social media hashtag for sharing pictures and videos of everyone in their graduation hat, there are so many online tools that can be used to bring people together when they can’t get together physically.

  1. Amplify the elements that remain the same. Virtual ceremonies can still include an exceptional and exciting guest speaker and graduates can still have their names read and their accomplishments honoured. While you may be tempted to make a virtual ceremony short and sweet, don’t be surprised by how many graduates are craving something formal. Do what you can to make the content as rich and special as possible.
